How to Get a Green Card
There are a number of options to obtain permanent resident status in the United States. Our attorneys help clients explore the following options:
- Employment-based immigration - Green cards are issued to non-resident workers based on level of skill, education, or ability.
- EB1 - The first preference is for workers with specialized training in the sciences, business, arts, or athletics.
- EB2 - The second preference is for workers with advanced degrees and significant work experience.
- EB3 - The third preference is for workers with 4-year degrees and some work experience.
- EB4 - The fourth preference is for religious workers including priests, monks, nuns, and others.
- EB5 - The fifth preference is for foreign entrepreneurs who will invest money into creating a new enterprise in the United States and create jobs.
- Family-based immigrant visas - Immediate relatives (children under 18, spouses, and parents) of United States citizens may be eligible for a green card. Other relatives may be eligible in a certain order of preference based on relationship.
- Visa lottery - 50,000 individuals from outside the United States are selected every year to receive a green card through the "Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery."
- Asylum - When a refugee faces the threat of persecution by returning to his or her home country, political asylum may be granted.
